“I named my project as The Beauty of Soviet Architecture. This title is satirical but there is also some logic in it. One thing I admire is that if Soviets really meant to use these buildings as some kind of weapon for psychological pressure, they achieved that for sure. And this is nothing about equality; this is mostly about not letting people feel different.
That’s why I think, after 1991, when the Soviet Union collapsed we suddenly got so much interference in those Soviet Blocks by the residents themselves. They would add balconies, loggias, windows and etc., and no one cared about that. They somehow felt free at last to do whatever they wanted.” – George Gogua

About the Artist
George Gogua is a Multimedia Journalist based in Tbilisi, Georgia. Since 2014 he has been working as a journalist for RFE/RL Georgian Service, Radio Tavisupleba. His works are mainly focused on Social-Cultural issues. His ongoing Long-term photo project, The Beauty of Soviet Architecture have bean teased several media outlets. His photos have been published by Georgian and International media outlets such as Liberali, Tskheli Shokoladi and Indigo Magazines in Georgia, National Film Board of Canada, and The Guardian.
