THE HOTEL LONDON was built in 1875. The Russian composer Tchaikovsky and Norwegian author Knut Hamsun both stayed in the hotel during their time in Tbilisi. Hamsun was so taken by the charm of the hotel that he wrote about it in his book ‘Travel to the Fairy Tale.’ The guests loved the hostess, Ekaterine Carl, who kept the hotel full because of its beautiful interior and quality service. A restuarant served gusts Georgian and European dishes as they gathered around a white piano and read the day’s papers. The Hotel London is now home to several families, and has since fallen into disrepair, but its charm remains.
