About the Artist
Dmitry Gomberg began his career in photography in 2004, when he received his first camera as a present. From the beginning he was fascinated by the process of taking pictures. He was born in the Soviet Union, and as he says it, “for a Soviet person, the Caucasus and all around the Black Sea was a kind of heaven.”
About the Print
He came to Georgia because of the Georgians he met while staying in New York including the Georgian documentary photographer, Daro Sulakauri. She was always inviting Dmitry to visit her country. “When I got there, I met her family, and her father told me about the pass in the mountains, which Tusheti Shepherds are taken. He told me about 300 meters slope covered with snow and rocks and how Shepherds push their horses from this slope, and how they roll down. I liked his story, and I wanted to see that with my own eyes. And that I did.”
While in Tusheti Dmitry was introduced to Vazha Kaadze. “The man, who became my guide, mentor and friend. During the time of 4 years we had many travels together, I get to know places and life that I didn’t see before. In the beginning some of the Shepherds didn’t like me taking pictures of them all the time. But I gained their trust, and they got used to having me around. They called me: our American Shepherd.”
