About the Print
The most iconic image from Tbilisi taken in April, 1989 by Yuri Mechitov. The image depicts protesters in the streets of the capital of Georgia. The photograph shows the character of Georgian society during one of the most tragic events in Georgia’s recent history. April 9th now remembered as the Day of National Unity refers to the attack of Soviet Army against the anti-Soviet demonstration when several Georgian protestors were killed.
About the Artist
Perhaps Georgia’s most well-known photographer, Yuri Mechitov is responsible for taking several of the most iconic images of Georgian society. During Soviet times, Mechitov was friends with several of the USSR’s most famous film directors and actors, including Sergei Parajanov, granting him unparalleled access to these figures lives. As a result, Mechitov has an impressive collection of celebrity portraiture. However, Yuri’s portfolio is far more expansive. Having spent several decades photographing Georgian society, Mechitov is perhaps the most well-known Georgian photographer working in the field today.
